Arabic Baptist Church continues the Food Distribution Mission in Newton Corner

For several years needy people in Newton turned to the Newton Corner Food Pantry and Clothing Closet to get their needed food and clothing. Although the faces in have changed but the mission remains the same. The Arabic Baptist Church took over ownership of Newton Corner Worship Center at 187 Church Street in August 2012 and also took over the responsibility for the bi-monthly Food Pantry and Clothing service. We gladly carry it on because we are part of the community and it’s a valued service.

The Arabic Baptist Church Boston is a part of an ethnic group of churches associated with the Baptist Convention of New England. The Arabic Baptist Church is also part of the Newton Community and we are very blessed to offer this service to our brothers and sisters who have needs in the Newton community as we are happy to bless others as God blessed us. All our workers for the food pantry and clothing pantry are volunteers from the church members and many other volunteers from the Newton community.

There are a lot of good people in Newton Community who donate food and clothing besides the financial support from the church and others. Ten to twelve volunteers participate every month from the church and outside the church, helping in the distribution of food and organizing the clothes. Last May, ten volunteers from the church helped Project Bread in their event “Walk for Hunger” to raise money for hungry people.

HISTORY

Margaret Ohanian opened the Food Pantry and Clothing Closet several years ago when the building was still the Hellenic Gospel Church. Ohanian passed away in 2009 and the Hellenic Church continued the mission until the Arabic Baptist Church took over building ownership in 2012, under the leadership of Rev. Sinote Ibrahim. The church has continued the work, carrying forward the mission of love and hope to the community of Newton Corner.

Currently there are more than 100 families registered and we do not reject any family who needs help. We believe that we are the only Food Pantry in the city who offers clothing closet in addition to the distribution of food.

On distribution days, we pray with people who come and give them a word of encouragement and offer Bibles and Christian literature to the new comers. We also pray for healing for those who have physical sickness and we share the gospel message- the Message of Love and Hope to all.

During the Christmas season, we also provide gifts and toys to pantry participants. These gifts and toys are donated to us from the Newton community. Many of the people come back to give thanks to the Lord for answering their prayers.

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and who believes in Me shall not thirst.” (John 6:35). Paul said to the Philippians: “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippian 4:19) Paragraph
